Mediclinic confirms Newcastle’s second case of Covid-19

"We are waiting for confirmation from the NICD and if they give us the go-ahead, the patient will be sent home for self-quarantine."

Newcastle’s second confirmed case of Covid-19 was being treated in an isolation unit at Mediclinic Newcastle, since Thursday.

Hospital spokesperson, Mathys Bornman told the Newcastle Advertiser the patient was admitted to hospital on Thursday (March 19) as a suspected case of the Covid-19. A private laboratory confirmed a positive result this morning.

“The patient was admitted into an isolation unit where nursing staff are trained and equipped to manage the patient, according to the level of care the illness requires according to the NICD (National Institute of Communicable Diseases) guidelines. A swab was done and the patient tested positive. The results were then sent to the NICD and the CDC,” said Bornman.

Bornman added the patient was likely going to be discharged today, as the initial reason for the patient being admitted has been resolved.

“We are waiting for confirmation from the NICD and if they give us the go-ahead, the patient will be sent home for self-quarantine.”

The patient does have a history of travel, according to Bornman.
