National lockdown: quieter streets but some still shop in Newcastle

Take a look at what Newcastle's CBD looked like on Day 1 of the national lockdown.

While many have isolated themselves on the first day of the national lockdown, many others are going about their business in town.

A drive through the Newcastle CBD and to major malls in town showed residents walking around, shopping and socialising, with many wearing no protective gear.

Most residential areas seemed quieter and even though police presence was minimal this afternoon, those who were patrolling were pulling off  private and public transport vehicles to check for permits and documentation.

While Newcastle is not a ‘ghost town’ yet, community groups on social media have reiterated calls to stay home unless critically necessary.
