COVID-19 community screenings will commence in ‘targeted’ areas only

Not ALL areas under Inkosi Langalibalele and Okhahlamba local municipalities will be visited by fieldworkers

Yesterday’s loudhailer announcement alerted residents that the Health Department would be conducting free COVID-19 screening and testing, starting from today (April 8), however the district municipality has confirmed that only ‘targeted areas’ will be included in this testing schedule.

Jabulani Mkhonza, spokesperson for Uthukela District Municipality clarified not ALL areas under Inkosi Langalibalele and Okhahlamba local municipalities will be visited by fieldworkers.

“Right now we are focusing on areas where there have been reports of people being ill or where people may have come in contact with a person who has tested positive for the coronavirus,” explained Mr Mkhonza.

He said that once the data from this screening is complete, other areas may be included in the second phase of screening and testing.

“Government health services are actively trying to find people who might need help through talking to people (screening) and thus to determine whether they need to go for testing so we can refer them for treatment,” he added.

Here are the areas that will be included in the community screening and testing, which commences from tomorrow (April 9):
Emabhanoyini, Zampumpu hostel and Khwezi, Winterton Winery and Khethani, Woodford and Rookdale and Dukuza and Sandlwane – April 9, 14, 15, 16 and 17.

“Community Health Care Workers will be provided with uniforms and identifiable tags which will make it easier for the community to identify them. Tests will only be conducted at health care facilities and mobile testing sites. Not everyone will be tested, health workers will use a formula by looking at how serious your symptoms are and what high risk factors you have,” concluded Mr Mkhonza.
