Municipality counters Covid-19 with ‘mass disinfection’ at Newcastle Taxi Rank

"The programme will be extended to shopping malls, streets, clinics and police stations."

The Newcastle Municipality, led by Mayor, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, launched its mass disinfection programme yesterday (April 7) at the Newcastle Taxi Rank. The programme is envisioned to help combat the spread of Covid-19.

“The programme will be extended to shopping malls, streets, clinics and police stations. The aim of this exercise is to prevent the virus from spreading faster. Residents are urged to give the disinfection teams space to conduct their duties. During this period, a number of roads will be closed for a few hours, especially at night,” said Dr Mahlaba.

The municipality, together with the Amajuba District Municipality and the Departments of Health, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Social Development, also took the programme to Madadeni.

Dr Mahlaba held a mini workshop with Madadeni residents, to outline the potential dangers of improper hygiene and educate residents on how to prevent the spread of the virus, by taking the necessary precautions. Residents were also given information packs, soaps and sanitisers.
