Second group moved into Monte Vista Casino homeless shelter

"They are obviously new to the environment and understandably, it took some effort to convince them to leave their usual place."

11 more homeless residents are now being sheltered at the Monte Vista Casino as of Tuesday (April 7). This second group will be joining the others currently residing at the casino’s community hall.

Sbonelo Cebekhulu, Head of Communications for the Amajuba District Municipality, stated it would take some time for the new group to adjust to the new surroundings.

“They are obviously new to the environment and understandably, it took some effort to convince them to leave their usual place. There is a challenge faced with the second group, as it seems many of them have a drug addiction.”

Cebekhulu explained however that most of the individuals did not appear violent and understood their addictions are a problem, and are reportedly willing to accept any form of assistance.

“Medical practitioners have been consulted and are working towards methods of easing the younger generation based at the shelter, off their addiction or craving.”

Cebekhulu explained further measures would still be put in place, to ensure the safety of all the occupants at the shelter.

“On matters of safety, we rely on SAPS and the security company hired by the Amajuba Municipality. All 11 persons were searched before they were placed into the provided transport, to take them to the shelter. This was done to ensure none of the individuals were in the possession of illegal substances.”

Stakeholders including the Departments of Health, Social Development and Community Safety and Liaison, are all said to be working closely with the homeless group at the shelter, and will monitor them for the remainder of the national 21-day lockdown.

“The important factor [to consider] is that we are dealing with people who seem to understand they have a drug addiction problem. Recovery is a journey and there might be challenges, but we will offer the best possible assistance we can and hope they change their ways for the better.”
