Dundee turns into Queue-Town as SAPS battle to control big crowds
Many of the jobless are seeking to apply for the R350 Government aid scheme
Central Dundee today has been overwhelmed by long queues as people battle to apply for UIF, claim their monthly grants and with draw grant money from ATMs.
Long queues of people are gathered outside the Dundee Post Office, Spar, Shoprite and Savemore as they wait patiently to claim their monthly grant. The Labour Office, across the road from the Municipality, is also overwhelmed by people claiming UIF and for applications for the R350-per-month Covid-19 grant applications due to be paid to millions of unemployed people. The first payments are expected on May 15, and will end in October.
The temporary Covid-19 grant is for the unemployed over the age of 18, who are receiving no other form of government assistance, including from the Unemployment Insurance Fund and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. They also can’t live in a government funded or subsidised institution, according to the Government’s website.
The grant will be available to South African citizens, permanent residents or refugees registered with Home Affairs. They have to live in South Africa. Applicants can also use WhatsApp 060 012 3456 or email SRD@sassa.gov.za for more information and for applications.
The SASSA office in the industrial area is also the scene of long queues with SAPS having their hands full of controlling the large crowd that has flocked to the office.
