Master keys for Ladysmith prison lost?

The keys can open all the doors at the prison

The master keys for the Ladysmith Correctional Services prison were recently misplaced or lost. The keys, which are able to open all cell doors at the prison, disappeared and to date have not been found. A massive hunt, which saw the entire prison turned upside-down, failed to unearth the missing keys.

An investigation by senior officials has led to several prison officials being suspended, and according to Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo has made promising progress.

Because of the risks of escape, “all the locks in the prison have been replaced,” said Nxumalo.

The Ladysmith prison houses up to plus-minus 700 prisoners.

He stressed that Correctional Services use their own artisans to replace locks, which are produced as an internal resource in prisons. “We make the locks ourselves,” he said.
