Dundee Tourism: “The phoenix will rise despite the extreme difficulties’

Once this COVID thing has run its course, you and your family are going to need a break!

The COVID 19 issue has dealt a mortal blow to the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. BUT there are still embers amongst the ashes. Once this COVID thing has run its course, you and your family are going to need a break!. Why not come away to the KZN battlefields and enjoy our scenery, fabulous people, fauna and flora, Zulu culture, great accommodation, hospitality and history. No group too big or too small.
Over the next couple of weeks we’re going to highlight attractions in the area and our top-notch accommodation.

THE BATTLEFIELDS TODAY
Dundee is an ideal base for your tour of the battle sites of Northern KwaZulu Natal. Equidistant from both Johannesburg and Durban (a 340 kilometre drive from either will get you here within four hours), there are a total of 68 major battle sites/ skirmishes around Dundee.

The better-known ones include Rorke’s Drift; Isandlwana; Blood River; Spioenkop; Majuba; Colenso, Hlobane and Ulundi.
Some sites have good museums and interpretive centres. Talana Museum and battlefield is superb. Blood River, Ladysmith Siege Museum, Ulundi and Rorke’s Drift offer differing standards of service. Others sites have very little, are somewhat remote and not easily found.

In this event visitors should consider engaging the services of a qualified tour guide to make the most of their trip, especially if the trip is a pilgrimage to trace the footsteps of a long gone relative.. One should not travel half way around the world and then skimp at the end.

Roads are sometimes in poor condition, especially during the rainy season from October to March. Many of them are dirt and although a conventional car will be able to reach most of the sites during the dry season, be warned! Don’t even attempt battle sites as Hlobane, for example, without a VERY robust, high clearance 4 x 4. Having said that, however, we specialise in organising 4×4/ quad bikes/ mountain bike outings into remote places that will challenge you to the limit..

The summer can be hot … sometimes VERY hot. But we don’t have any malaria!
One of the main attractions of travelling to most of the Zulu War battle sites is that most of them are situated in tribal areas offering breathtaking scenery and incredibly nice people.

Contact Tourism Dundee (www.tourdundee.co.za) for generic information and accommodation establishments in the area. Guides can also organize a personal itinerary to suit individual requirements.
A battle re-enactment takes place annually at Isandlwana, normally on the Saturday closest to 22 January. It is an awesome experience for both participants and spectators alike. Bring a deck chair, some suitable refreshments and lots of patience! “Zulu Time” is a definite philosophy to contend with!
