Rumours of a local woman contracting Covid-19 have been swirling around Dundee since the weekend. Posts to this affect, made by various locals, were seen on multiple social media platforms.

Despite various attempts by the Courier to confirm the rumours, the authorities have neither denied nor confirmed the claim as policy prohibits them from providing detailed comment.

According to Covid-19 reporting protocols, cases cannot be published by the media unless confirmed by an official spokesperson from the place in question, the patient themselves, or the Department of Health or National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NCID).

Queries were forwarded to the DoH and the NCID, asking for confirmation of the case.

The NCID failed to respond, but communication was received from the DoH. Deputy Director: Media Liaison for KZN, Agiza Hlongwane, explained that the department could not confirm positive cases. “This is the sole preserve of the Minister of Health.”
