Pollution foams up in Steenkoolspruit

The Steenkoolspruit flows through Dundee

Samples have been taken of the foaming effluent that polluted the Steenkoolspruit in recent weeks.
A spokesperson for the Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) told the Courier that officials had reacted to the photographs taken and sent to the department by the Courier.

The photos, that clearly show serious levels of effluent contamination, were taken from near the bridge in Commercial Road (that leads to the Avon Industrial Area).

The DWAF spokesperson said that the results of the sampling would be released “shortly”, but confirmed that the pollution “originates from a sewage leak upstream”.

The Steenkoolspruit flows through Dundee and past the sewage works before joining the Buffalo River, from where Endumeni and Nquthu residents receive their water for domestic consumption.
