Local tourism and hospitality businesses called to action

Information collected in the survey will be kept confidential.

Local businessman and events co-ordinator, Johan Pieters, is anxious to know the devastating impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the tourism and entertainment industry, particularly in Newcastle and its surrounding areas.

He has offered to assist the provincial economic development and tourism department to gather data from businesses but needs the business sector’s assistance.

“The tourism industry has been the hardest hit,” said Pieters. “I believe the pandemic has devastated this sector, followed closely by entertainment and events and the hospitality sector, but until we can measure this impact, Government will not understand or be able to get to grips with the extent of the damage,” said Pieters.

Pieters hopes the data will drive some kind of intervention to assist the tourism sector in the region, and said the audit on the impact of the pandemic may give province information to assist and assess.

“We will certainly drive this through the Newcastle Growth Coalition,” Pieters assured.

Business, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sector, only have to fill in the survey form below and email it to covid19@newcastle.co.za.

All information will be treated as strictly confidential.
