Celebrating World Snake Day

Do you view snakes as friend or foe?

Love them or hate them, snakes are the oldest mythological characters and even have a day dedicated to them.

Celebrated every July 16, World Snake Day was created to help people gain a better understanding and appreciation for these animals.

While many people are afraid of snakes, and naturally so, others love the slithery serpents. They’re even worshipped and revered by many civilizations across the world.

DID YOU KNOW? There are approximately 3 500 species of snakes in the world and only 600 of these are venomous. There are also only 200 species of snake that pose a considerable risk to human life, so more often than not snakes get a bad reputation. That’s not to say that snakes can’t be dangerous though.

The most deadliest snakes in South Africa are the Black Mamba, Puff Adder, Cape Cobra, Boomslang and Rinkals.

In the event that you’re bitten by one of these snakes, seeks medical assistance immediately.

Are you a snake lover? Have you ever held one or maybe even own one? Let us know on our social media pages.
