Water shortage still a crisis in Umhlumayo during Covid-19 pandemic
"We will blame uThukela if anyone dies from Covid in this area"
As the country battles the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the emphasis is on people washing their hands with water and soap.
However, residents of Umhlumayo’s Mankandane area say they are living in appalling conditions, as they do not have water and their taps are broken.
The unhappy residents add that if a member of their community contracts the virus, they will hold uThukela District Municipality responsible, as they have reported this problem several times but nothing has been done about it.
“In the Mankandane area, Ward 28, we don’t have running water, as our taps are broken and the pipes are ruined. This forces us to drink dirty water from the dams. We have reported this problem to the district, but they do not assist us in any way. We are very scared, since we are faced with this pandemic and we still do not have water,” said Mr Njoko, who is in the Ward 28 Committee.
A Ladysmith Gazette reporter conducted a telephonic interview with Councillor Majola from Umhlumayo, who said he is aware of the water shortage problems this community faces and that he has reported it to uThukela several times, but nothing has been done.
