Tourism is one of the major sectors in the Okhahlamba area. With its world-famous Drakensberg Mountains, this world heritage site attracts visitors from across the globe.
This income is what sustains many of the residents, whether it be a luxury hotel or a crafter at the side of the road.

However, Covid-19 lockdown regulations have seen tourism take a nosedive, with many businesses and families taking financial strain.
A group of concerned locals from the Okhahlamba area are joining a national protest against government’s continuous lockdown of the tourism sector.
Plans have been made to stage a peaceful protest today (July 22).
“In Okhahlamba, we will form a human chain between Winterton and Bergville that will adhere to social distancing (2m apart) with masks,” said one of the organisers, Thys Janse van Rensburg.
Tourism establishment personnel were encouraged to join in from 11am until 12.45pm and take their spot along the R74 with their placards.
The group is also expected to hand over a memorandum for the MEC.
