NEWCASTLE: As crime escalates, Cllr pleads with police to work with the community
Newcastle Council's Chief Whip, Cllr Nomusa Mnguni invited various stakeholders to a prayer meeting in Blaauwbosch.
The killing of young girls in the Blaauwbosch, Madadeni, Osizweni and surrounding areas, prompted Newcastle Council’s Chief Whip, Cllr Nomusa Mnguni to invite various stakeholders to a prayer meeting convened on October 2 at Blue House in Blaauwbosch.
During the meeting, attended by representatives from different churches, the SAPS, African National Congress Women’s League and the Newcastle Municipality, Cllr Mnguni pleaded with police to work closer with the community to fight crime in these areas.
A number of representatives in attendance claimed they had received complaints from the communities regarding local boys joining an organisation called ‘Wrong Turn’ – a group notorious for its alleged gangsterism and criminal activities.
Warrant Officer Buyani Mazibuko of the SAPS, said drug dealing and abuse are rife in the area which contributed towards the crime statistics.
“Although we have received many complaints about the high number of drug dealers in Osizweni and Blaauwbosch, the problem is residents, who know the identity of these dealers, are often too afraid or hesitant to pass this information on to police,” commented WO Mazibuko.
He encouraged the community to report issues to the police in order to help rid the community of its crime.
