The book has finally been closed on a gruesome murder and rape case from 2018.
During proceedings at the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on September 22 this year, Taolana Thabanga (24) was found guilty of a crime committed around February 2018.
At the time, a resident passing by an open veld near a railway line in KwaMathukuza noticed a body and contacted SAPS. Police officials who responded reported the body was half-naked and had sustained multiple stab wounds to the chest.
The docket was then assigned to Detective Sergeant ZM Mthembu for investigation. Lizzy Arumugam, of the SAPS Corporate Communications office, said the determination, hard work and long hours of intensive investigation by the detective finally bore fruit this year.
On count one of murder and counts two and three of rape (counted as one), Thabanga received two life prison terms. On count four of robbery with aggravating circumstances, he received an additional 15 years to the sentence.
Commander of SAPS Newcastle Detectives, Colonel JJ Kubheka thanked Detective Sergeant Mthembu for her dedication and good work, to ensure a successful conviction.
