NEWCASTLE KZN: N11 closed between Newcastle and Volksrust due to protest
Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.
The N11 between Newcastle and Volksrust is currently closed due to a service delivery protest in the Ingogo area.
According to an unofficial source, Ingogo residents are protesting about electricity supply in the area. The road from the Ingogo rise is currently barricaded.
Head of Communications for Newcastle Municipality, Mlungisi Khumalo confirmed police are currently on scene and Newcastle Traffic is diverting motorists from Newcastle, advising them to use alternative routes.
“The municipality, as a critical stakeholder, will try to ascertain what the issues are and address them accordingly. We want to urge these residents to remain calm and engage with us as the municipality.”
Khumalo added the main concern at this time is to ensure no-one is injured.
“We need to find long-lasting solutions to the issues these residents are facing. We treat every issue as a priority,” he confirmed.
At this stage, motorists are being advised to seek alternative routes and drive with caution.
