NEWCASTLE KZN: Mediclinic Newcastle amends visiting hours as Covid-19 admissions decline

Revised visiting hours will be implemented as of today.

With a noted decline in Covid-19 admissions at Mediclinic Newcastle, as well as the steady decline in Covid-19 positivity rates in Newcastle and the surrounding community, management believes it is now possible to expand visitation of non-Covid patients.

According to Dr Stefan Smuts, Chief Clinical Officer of Mediclinic Southern Africa, revised visiting hours will be implemented as of today (Wednesday, March 3).

“Mediclinic Newcastle understands that patients and their loved ones are important partners in healing. We would like to thank our community for their patience during these difficult times and we look forward to welcoming more visitors to our facilities in the coming months,” said Dr Smuts.

He added that as Mediclinic Newcastle gradually reduces visiting restrictions, management appreciates all visitors as partners in maintaining safe environments for patients and caregivers.

“Mediclinic Newcastle believes this move is appropriate, as we have been able to downscale the number of units hosting Covid-19 patients as a result of the drop in demand. The hospital has a number of units including an ICU, dedicated to supporting non-Covid patients at this time.”

Dr Smuts and Mediclinic Newcastle management further encourages the community to play their part during this pandemic by limiting the risk of infection for individuals and their families.

“This includes wearing masks in public, strictly maintaining social distancing as well as practising good hand hygiene.”

He concluded by saying that Mediclinic would continue to review the visiting policy for its hospitals and make adjustments as it believes is best for the safety of the patients, staff and doctors.

Revised visiting hours:

From 10am to 6pm daily, allowing one visitor to enter.

It is important to note that the visitor must be healthy and pass the temperature and symptom screening upon arrival, as Mediclinic Newcastle is unable to allow visitor access to anyone who is unwell.
