Ladysmith KZN: Local learner is crowned Spelling Bee champion

The Spelling Bee was held in Jo'burg, with participants from all over the country taking part

17-year-old Ladysmith High School (LHS) learner Shakaarah Bharath is a national champion for spelling.

Shakaarah applied to be part of the Master Spelling Bee competition that was open to all students from Grade 10 to 12.

Due to the effects and constraints brought on by Covid-19, the competition went straight to national level.

The Spelling Bee was held in Johannesburg, with participants from all over the country taking part.

There were 20 rounds in each heat and Shakaarah made it through to the finals after 40 rounds, eventually taking first place.

In her preparation, Shakaarah made flash cards that she stuck on almost every wall of her home… And her mother questioned her every day.

Over the past few months, she dedicated two hours a day to practice her spelling.

Her parents had the following to say, “We are extremely proud of Shakaarah for pushing the limits. She embraces vitality of spirit to project herself far beyond the realms of the ordinary. She loves challenges and radiates pride, passion and commitment.”

Well done, Shakaarah, on your wonderful achievement.
