ESTCOURT KZN: uThukela debt collectors told ‘not to come back’

"We cannot have water cut-offs in the middle of a pandemic, the timing is wrong”

Dozens of residents gathered in Sixth Avenue, Forderville at 1pm today (March 17).

The reason for the community meeting, which was called by Ward 10 councillor Edith Lite, was to address the water cut-offs and restrictions implemented by uThukela District Municipality during a debt recovery programme.

Residents waited for over an hour before it became apparent that no one from the district municipality would be present to address the community.

Cllr Lite explained that she had intercepted the debt recovery team while they were in Verbena Road earlier in the day and requested that they immediately stop the water cuts and restrictions.

“I asked the man to go off site and not come back until a meeting takes place between the community and uThukela. I was not informed about the cut-offs and neither was the community. We cannot have water cut-offs in the middle of a pandemic, the timing is wrong,” said Cllr Lite.

She added that she would accompany ward committee members to Ladysmith tomorrow (March 18) where a meeting will be held with uThukela, requesting a meeting with the community.

Until then she urged residents not to allow the contractors onto their property.
