DUNDEE KZN: Steely Chris keeps on rolling

People have been very kind to me and never fail to tip - regardless of colour or creed."

Christiaan Albertus Wenecke is a well-known figure in his wheelchair, guarding cars outside ABSA Bank. Friendly and alert, Chris (as he is better known) has maintained his good nature despite suffering hardship.

Born in Port Elizabeth in 1951, Chris said he attended many schools, as his family moved around quite a bit. After school, he worked at the railways, where he served for over 20 years, finishing up as a general assistant and artisan. Upon his retirement from the railways, he says he had “numerous other jobs”. He married Sarah, and they had four children from their previous marriages.

Chris says he moved to Dundee “some time ago” with Sarah. It was about eight or so years ago, he says, that he was bitten by a spider. The wound was so bad that gangrene set in rapidly, spreading to both his legs. He was treated at Dundee Hospital, Madadeni Hospital and Grey’s Hospital, with numerous operations performed. Both legs were eventually amputated.

Determined to carry on as ‘normal’, Chris and Sarah worked as a team to guard cars – Chris in his wheelchair and Sarah also keeping faithful watch.

The sudden death of Sarah left Chris devastated. But again he says he had no option but to continue guarding cars to make a living. “People have been very kind to me and never fail to tip – regardless of colour or creed. I thank them for their generosity, especially in these difficult times during the lockdown.” Before he lost his legs, Chris was a keen fisherman and loved walking.

He says a “very kind gentleman” has promised to buy him a new wheelchair by the end of December. Chris’ wheelchair takes a hammering, as he leaves every morning from his room in Cornill Street and rolls up McKenzie Street, managing to get over the bridge to reach his spot outside ABSA. Chris’ tale is certainly one of steely determination. SAY: Like our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter and Instagram or email us at dundee.courier@caxton.co.za. Add us on WhatsApp 071 277 1394.
