DUNDEE KZN: Sentraal rugby players glad to be out on the field

"These guys are very enthusiastic and make a lot of sacrifices to get into Dundee. Transport is one of our major costs and any funding for this would be wonderful."

Rugby fans and players will soon have plenty to look forward to, as plans are in place to ensure that the sport can again be enjoyed after a 12-month hiatus as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

While the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union (KZNRU) has revealed that this year’s funding prospects seem promising from the clubs in the Northern KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Sub Union, clubs are urged to table a breakdown of costs and to submit these to the union to receive funding ahead of the league fixtures. The costs could include travel, hosting and first-aid expenses,

This was revealed by Vernon Chetty and Archie Sehlako of the KZNRU, who were in Newcastle recently to meet with local rugby officials from the NKZNRU. The need to enforce all Covid-19 regulations on the rugby field was also high on the agenda. Apart from the NKZN League Structures, it was also confirmed that the Dewar Shield and Brian Irvine, Murray and Junior Murray Cups would commence soon.

The Junior Murray Cup will host the top four teams in NKZN and the top four teams in Southern KZN. The quarter finals and semi-finals will be held at home, but the finals will take place in Durban, with prize money on the line! Bi-weekly practice sessions for Sentraal Rugby Club (held at the Dundee High School grounds) are well attended, with a new coaching team in place.

Andre Fourie, an old Dundonian, travels in from Newcastle to put the players through their paces, assisted by Deon Kriel and former players Dudley Kitching and Dolf Kruger. The players had a rigorous session last Thursday, despite the attentions of a brewing storm.

Deon Kriel said at least eight to 10 players travel in from the Dannhauser district. “These guys are very enthusiastic and make a lot of sacrifices to get into Dundee. Transport is one of our major costs and any funding for this would

be wonderful.”
