Alfred Duma Local Municipality communications manager Siyabonga Maphalala recently commented on the issue. He would like to remind cattle owners that it is their individual responsibility to look after their cattle.
The municipality has received many complaints from concerned residents regarding cattle roaming freely in residential areas.
Council has a procedure manual on how to attend to roaming cattle, whereby regular patrols are carried out by By-Law Enforcement Officers, who may impound wandering cattle.
The procedure manual also allows the municipality to prosecute owners through fines for allowing their cattle to be left unattended on public roads and in residential areas.
Residents are urged to report this problem by phoning the Department Public Safety & Emergency Services on 0366311777.
