KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance Ravi Pillay, delegated by the premier of the province, today (June 15) introduced a team of inspectors to the community of KwaHlathi, who have been digging for diamonds on Imbulwane Mountain.

The inspectors are from the Council for Mineral Technology and Council for Geoscience. Their task is to determine whether the stones that were discovered are diamonds or not, and a secondary task is to check the whole area to see if there are any minerals of any sort present.

The MEC urged the community to allow the inspectors to do their job and to be patient as they wait for the results. “Our duty as government was to come and give guidance, since we had a similar experience in Harding on the South Coast, where there was allegedly a gold discovery. After tests, we were able to inform the community accordingly. The immediate task is to examine the stones that were found, the results of which we expect in the short term. Another task is to examine the whole area for other possibilities,’’ said MEC Pillay.
