Ladysmith KZN: No diamonds, but KwaHlathi is all set for development

Service delivery issues are being tackled by government

It’s not the end of the road for the community of KwaHlathi, as government is set to speed up on delivering services to the area. Yesterday (June 20), the community of KwaHlathi received the ‘bad news’: it was in fact quartz crystals and not diamonds that were found in the area. However, community members’ complaints about lack of service delivery have not fallen on deaf ears, according to government.

Speaking at a media briefing that was held yesterday (June 20) in the Town Hall, MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison Ms Peggy Nkonyeni said they have noted that the people of this area, especially women, have an interest in the mining sector. For this reason, the Department of Mineral Resources will be coming back soon to offer workshops that will help the community and shed light on how to go about entering the mining industry.

The MEC continued by addressing the complaints the community raised, such as road conditions and lack of water in the area. ”This is not the first time I have been here. I was here a few weeks back and we are in the process of maintaining the roads in this area,” said MEC Nkonyeni.
