DUNDEE KZN: Surge in theft of electric gate motors

Day time theft has spiked

Motors, that operate electric gates, are being targeted by thieves. In recent weeks, the Courier has been told of almost 20 motor gates that have been stolen in the Dundee and Glencoe area.

Some of the motors have been stolen in the early hours of the morning but some residents have said that thieves are ‘so blatant that they even steal the motors during the day’.

Even security covers, made to protect the motors, are removed by thieves to access their target. SAPS believe that a syndicate, with a market for stolen motors, is scouring the area. Residents are asked to be more vigilant and if you see any suspicious people in the area to please contact the nearest police station.

Those living in the Berea area have called the Courier to voice their concerns over at least three break ins last week. Outhouses and tool sheds were targeted by men who jumped over fences during the day while the home owners were at home. Garden equipment and other tool were stolen.

Residents say ‘there are many people loitering in the area during the day but are afraid to confront them for fear of reprisals’. In some case, the local Emergency 911 Group has responded in a bid to look for the suspects.
