DUNDEE: Chess Club aims at making the right moves

"At present, we only have 45 members, but we are trying to recruit more people"

What started as an initiative to introduce chess to previously disadvantaged youngsters has now grown into the Chess Club of Endumeni.

Nompilo Thwala, the deputy chairperson of the club, explained that while embarking on their vision of teaching chess to the poorer communities, they realised that many others love the ‘sport’ and there was a big demand to start up an actual chess club in Endumeni.

The club was then registered during this year. Nomplio and Vincent Buthelezi, the chairman of the club, both avidly play the game themselves and are currently trying to recruit more players, adding that the club is open to all races and people from each ward.

“At present, we only have 45 members, but we are trying to recruit more people,” said Nompilo. The club is also looking for a venue where people can meet to play chess. For more information, contact Vincent Buthelezi on 082 627 3326 or Nompilo Thwala on 061 776 7050.
