"As our tactical team approached the suspects on the roof, they started running..."

A group of business burglars, believed to be part of a syndicate, were caught red-handed on Monday night (December 14).

According to official sources, Amajuba ISI received a lead about the possible syndicate last night. Information was gathered and the target was confirmed.

By this stage, the suspects were already atop a building and beginning to break in with power tools.

An operational team was formed comprising Newcastle K9, Newcastle Crime Prevention, Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team, the Anti-Hijacking Unit, local security companies, and volunteer crime-fighters.

“As our tactical team (Warrant Officer Klynsmith and Imran Ghafoor) approached the suspects on the roof, they started running,” explained Ghafoor, a member of the Crime Fighter Task Team.

Lizzy Arumugam from Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications confirmed the details as provided. Four suspects were arrested and will be charged as follows:

Charge 1 – possession of house-breaking implements

Charge 2 – house-breaking

“All four suspects were detained. I would like to thank the Muslim community who assisted us, and thanks to everyone else who assisted with another job well done,” concluded Ghafoor.

The Newcastle Advertiser has contacted Newcastle SAPS for a formal comment and additional details. These will be provided once response is received.
