LETTER TO THE EDITOR: What is the purpose of the ill-advised Umzinyathi District Municipality?

Endumeni Municipality and the newly-amalgamated surrounding towns compromising Dundee, Glencoe and Wasbank were immediately at a huge disadvantage on the implementation of this newly-formed Endumeni Municipality.

Editor –
One of the biggest mistakes that was ever made by the Transitional Government was the creation of district municipalities.
In particular, one need only look into the boundaries of Umzinyathi and new surrounding district municipalities. Those who chose to ‘subdivide’ the area into district councils obviously never even considered the consequences of their deeds.
Endumeni Municipality and the newly-amalgamated surrounding towns compromising Dundee, Glencoe and Wasbank were immediately at a huge disadvantage on the implementation of this newly-formed Endumeni Municipality. The old Regional Water & Services Board within the bounds of the former municipal areas of jurisdiction of Dundee and Glencoe legally had their own. With government / provincial approval of Tom Worthington Dam and Verduk Dam in Hattingspruit, these two dams supplied the two towns with sufficient potable water for both towns, including Hattingspruit. Both these dams, following the implementation of Umzinyathi District Municipality, are now under the jurisdiction of Amajuba District Municipality.
Yet the purification plant is housed within the bounds of Endumeni Municipality.
The purification thereof (water) was / is undertaken on the upper reaches of Mpati Mountain, in close proximity of both these towns. This provided sufficient water for consumption by both towns.
Just by reading the article ‘Fairness of disconnection’ in the Courier newspaper, one can only but wonder at the fairy tale dream that officials of Umzinyathi District Municipality live and work by.
My candid opinion of these ‘powers that be’ is: I got a job and what are you going to do about it?
