Woman robbed of R3 000 in Newcastle CBD –
Newcastle SAPS is urging residents to be vigilant, as robberies appear to be on the rise. In one incident earlier this month, a woman was robbed of R3 000 at knifepoint on Scott Street.
The complainant alleged she was on foot when two unidentified men approached her, threatened her with a knife and stole a large sum of cash in her possession. Newcastle Detectives are now investigating a case of robbery with a deadly weapon.
Lizzy Arumugam, from the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, explained that a series of robberies were reported to the local station over the past month or so. One such incident occurred in Amiel Park on April 7.
The complainant told SAPS he was walking home when three men accosted him and forcibly searched him. He was then robbed of a cell phone, and cash totalling R26 720,
Just two days later (April 9), another incident took place at a property on Van Der Bijl Street, in the Airport Industrial area.
A security company told the business owner they had caught two suspects on the premises, who seemed to be stealing from the property,” explained Arumugam.
When the owner arrived at the location, he noticed a R3 600 swimming pool pump had been stolen. The suspects were handed over to police and an investigation is currently underway.
On the same date, SAPS was dispatched to another robbery scene on Murchison Street in the CBD. The complainant alleged he was approached by a person who claimed to have picked up money, and wanted to share this amount.
They were… approached by a vehicle whose driver informed them that a robbery had occurred at a neighbouring establishment, and they had seen the male pick up the envelope. They then ordered everyone to get into the car and proceeded to steal the complainant’s belongings, including R3 650 in cash,” concluded Arumugam.
