The water crisis in Ladysmith continues…
JoJo tanks at the Hanuman Temple in Rose Terrace and Hare Krishna Temple in Centenary Road have been filled with water, and community members are allowed to collect from these tanks.
Kerwin Mungroo from the Acaciavale area took his own private JoJo tank and put it outside his house in Dianthus Road for people to fetch water from.
Abed Karrim from the Al-Imdaad Foundation has commented on the current situation. He said the leadership of the municipality has to sort out the water pumps, which they say are silting up every time there are floods.
“The community cannot continue in this fashion without water, as it is a basic human right. The dilemma needs to be corrected and rectified as soon as possible,” said Karrim.
He continued that, “If the province cannot do it, then national government has to step in to resolve what is going on in our town. This is an ongoing problem and we, as the Al-Imdaad Foundation, have come on board to help. We have been joined by individuals and the private sector, and also uThukela water tankers, to help out in areas that need it. We understand that there are times when the pumps break or when maintenance takes place, but nine days without water is unacceptable. How are the elderly, the sick and young children expected to cope? What about people who are on chronic medication? It’s time we put our heads together as the municipality, community and all stakeholders to find a solution for once and for all.”
