This past weekend, Vryheid Rugby Club’s second team played against Utrecht. It was a runaway win for the Vryheid boys and a welcome debut for the Utrecht team, who had been absent from club rugby since 2016. The Utrecht club turned 100 years old in 2015 and soon after, things slowed down and stopped completely. They had lost their rugby field at that stage, but fortunately they have managed to get it back again. They are hard at work now to restore the field and the club. Jaco Maritz says this is a sign that club rugby is not dying.

Utrecht competes in the second league, which means they do not have a first team. At Saturday’s game, their forward pack was huge and their scrums dominated the field. At the start of the game, Utrecht dominated the line-outs as well, but their fitness failed them and gave Vryheid the opportunity to gain back their line-outs. Vryheid’s backline was superior on the day, even though the forwards made no impact on the neighbouring town’s forwards. Lack of discipline saw Vryheid getting three yellow cards during the game and ending the match with 13 players on the field. The only major difference between the two teams was fitness levels, game time and experience that tipped the scale in Vryheid’s favour. “It was a privilege to play against Utrecht and I believe they will make a comeback in the years to come. I am just happy they are back in the game,” said Maritz.

This coming Saturday, Vryheid will take on Sentraal, which is also a fund-raising event for Ettienne Roux. Ettienne is a very promising 17-year-old first team rugby player at Hoërskool Pionier who was injured during a game. He is in urgent need of a major knee operation and doesn’t have a medical aid. The rugby club has decided to support Ettienne and his family by donating the entrance fee to Saturday’s game towards his operation. Maritz urges the community to support the club and Ettienne on Saturday. Not only will spectators have the privilege of watching this ‘clash of the titans’ game, but they will also be supporting a young rugby player who is in need of an operation. The second team’s kick-off is scheduled for 14:00.
