Cable theft is on the rise

The lucrative market creates the opportunity for cable theft incidents to increase

The municipality’s Electricity Department has noticed an increase in cable theft in Estcourt over the past few months.

Six cases of cable theft have been registered with the local police and an investigation is ongoing.

Without divulging sensitive information which may jeopardise the investigation, Acting Municipal Manager Zakhona Ndlela said that the hot-spots were the CBD, Forderville, Colita, Mimosadale and Osizweni.

“Thieves scout these areas during the day and night. After midnight, they cut cables from poles or use a vehicle to pull the cables out,” explained Ndlela when asked about the criminals’ modus operandi.

Residents are encouraged to be on the lookout for suspicious activities and report any incidents to police.

“Residents should report any suspicious-looking individuals or groups of people loitering around their neighbourhood. Also ensure that the police open a case should residents see any cables being damaged. Switch on outside lights if the streetlights are not working,” advises Ndlela.
