Five people have been convicted and sentenced by the Newcastle Regional Court, for the possession of stolen property and tampering with vital infrastructure.
According to the Spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, the five accused were arrested by members of the Kingsley Visible Policing (Vispol) Unit on July 4. The arrests came after police officials discovered pieces of copper cable in the boot of their Toyota Quantum.
The suspects have been identified by the Hawks as Zefania Bhululu (32), Mike Chauke (28), Izek Mapamo (25), James Mawoza (27) and Mzomhle Thathi (26).
At Kingsley Police Station, a case of possession of stolen property was registered and the case docket was assigned to Hawks members from Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation.”
The copper cables were revealed to have been stolen from Transnet railway lines in Mahlabathini, according to Cpt Mhlongo. The five accused were sentenced to 10 years in prison and were further declared unfit to possess firearms.
