A new Toyota Fortuner awaits this year’s Championship Boerewors winner. Entries for the prestigious competition opened this week and will run until June 17.

Now in its 30th year, Championship Boerewors continues its goal to reveal the country’s finest wors recipes. As before, thousands of chefs and home cooks will vie for the title of ‘best boerewors maker’ and the chance to see their products on supermarket shelves.

Deputy GM of Marketing at Shoprite and Checkers, Janine van Aswegen said the event is an annual highlight of the retailer’s calendar.

When we launched the competition 30 years ago, we had no idea how popular it would become and how impressive and innovative the various recipes would be. Three decades in – and after a record-breaking number of entries last year – we’re excited to see what the 2022 edition brings.”

In addition to the winner’s prize of the new car, the second- and third-placed boerewors makers will receive R30 000 and R20 000 in cash respectively.

According to Shoprite, all recipes must adhere to strict guidelines for making traditional boerewors. Recipes will be judged by a panel of experts from the South African Chefs Association, who will whittle entries down to the top 10.

The top 10 will then be invited by Shoprite and Checkers to prepare and cook their boerewors for the judging panel. A winner will then be chosen to receive the title of Championship Boerewors maker for 2022.
