Businessman shot dead in drive-by shooting
Approximately 13 shots were fired at Zulu and his passengers

Residents are saying that Vryheid is turning into a war zone… Yet another shooting shocked the town only three days after the attempted assassination of a councillor. On Monday afternoon, a businessman was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in East Street. Thando Zulu and his brother were in his white Toyota bakkie, with two bodyguards on the back, when a silver Toyota bakkie drove up to the deceased’s parked vehicle and opened fire.
One of the passengers in Zulu’s vehicle returned fire, squeezing off about 17 shots, as the silver bakkie was speeding away in a northerly direction. Approximately 13 shots were fired at Zulu and his passengers. The businessman was killed instantly, while the two bodyguards were injured and taken to hospital.
The deceased’s brother, who was unharmed in the shooting, commented that, “It all happened so fast and we didn’t see it coming.” It is believed that a third person who was also sitting in front in the vehicle was shot in the shoulder during the crossfire. Video footage of the shooting indicates that a person was standing at the bakkie’s window when they opened fire.
It is believed that the motive behind the shooting is drug-related and that this is a revenge killing. According to police, Zulu had been arrested on several occasions for dealing with drugs. No arrests have yet been made.
