More than 11 killed on KZN roads
Head of the KZN Department of Transport, Siboniso Mbhele condemned the action of reckless drivers.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport (DoT) has called for ‘extra vigilance’ on the roads, following 11 deaths in collisions over the weekend.
In a statement this week, DoT Head of Department, Siboniso Mbhele condemned motorists’ behaviour and appealed for drivers to abide by the rules of the road.
Mbhele’s condemnations came in the wake of two serious collisions over the weekend. The first occurred on June 26 on the P47 near Mondlo, Vryheid, between a bakkie and light motor vehicle. Five occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
The second collision occurred on the N3 at Cliffdale (between Pietermaritzburg and Durban). Five people died at the scene and another one occupant while en route to hospital.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of so many people in one weekend. 11 lives is not a small number and such major crashes are heart-breaking,” said Mbhele.
He confirmed that investigations into both of the collisions were underway, and stated that action would be taken ‘without hesitation’ where necessary.
Mbhele further extended his condolences to the affected families, and wished a speedy recovery to those in hospital.
The cost to the economy of these accidents is huge. We will continue to increase vigilance as school are closed for the winter holidays.”
