Newcastle Municipality helps contribute towards a healthier environment

Newcastle Municipality planted over ten trees at various schools around the town on October 21, to combat climate change and commemorate National Arbor Day.
A statement released by the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Department said Cllr Hlatshwayo, Portfolio Chairperson for Community Services, planted the indigenous trees as part of the Arbor Day campaign activities at Iziko Primary School, Sizakancane Primary School and Qaphelani Primary School.
Among the trees planted was the Pompom (Dias Contifolia) tree, which has been designated as the ‘National Tree of the year 2022.’
“The campaign aims to raise awareness among South Africans about the importance of conserving, protecting, and planting trees for environmental and human-related reasons. The goal is to raise awareness of the value and significance of trees and forests among Newcastle residents,” the statement read.
In his address to the learners, Cllr Hlatshwayo emphasized the critical role that trees play in sustainable development and the livelihoods of people and their environment. He also urged educators to encourage students to care for the environment by not littering, creating food gardens, and planting trees.
Cllr Hlatshwayo also walked the students through the steps of planting a tree and encouraged them to care for the trees as part of their daily schoolwork.
