Newcastle municipality tackles sewer crisis
The Municipality hired a contractor, who has since completed the new sewer line at the Railway Houses.
The town’s much-maligned sewer lines are finally being upgraded after years of neglect. For months, Newcastle has been dealing with a sewer crisis, with effluent overflowing into many businesses and homes.
Ward 4 Councillor Bertie Meiring provided an update on the ongoing project to the Advertiser, stating that the Municipality has already dug a trench to connect water to one of the houses on Lyell Street after being unable to connect the water to the existing line due to its age.
“A new 70-meter trench was dug to connect the water to another line. This was a big job, and they had to dig the trench all the way through to the tar. However, the job was finally completed last week Friday,” he said.
The Municipality hired a contractor, who has since completed the new sewer line at the Railway Houses.
“Because the old line had collapsed, they couldn’t start the sewer pump on Church Street.” As a result of the collapsed pipe, sewage overflowed at the Railway Houses whenever the pump was turned on,” he explained.
