A new private, fully operational three-phase hospital is being planned for Rooibok Avenue in Hutten Heights.
The hospital site will be a significant development for Newcastle, with immediate economic benefits in terms of job creation, municipal revenue, and national exposure.
The application was submitted in August 2018 and is awaiting clearances, according to Bertie Meiring, Portfolio Chairperson for Development, Town Planning, and Human Settlement.
Requests were made to rezone the land in order to proceed with the development plans.
This was followed by public involvement and newspaper advertisements calling for comment and objections with none being received to date.
“If the rezoning is denied, the only other alternative is to build the hospital in the open field across from CTM and the Newcastle Mall, which according to the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act (SPLUMA) is already allocated for a medical area,” he said.
Meiring revealed that doctors from Pietermaritzburg and Durban had requested the construction of the hospital, which would provide world-class medical care.
“A brilliant and sought-after architect has already drawn up the building designs, and once the rezoning approval is finalized, construction of the hospital will begin.”
