Disaster management teams were dispatched to assess damage in the Osizweni area following the heavy rains of the weekend.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC Sihle Zikalala said in a statement to IOL News that Disaster Management teams were responding to several incidents in the Osizweni area.
This comes after heavy rains hit the area on Saturday.
“Disaster management teams are currently assessing the extent of the damage in the area. Following the heavy rains that hit parts of the province over the weekend, the provincial disaster management centre is still in contact with all municipalities.”
Zikalala urged residents to remain vigilant as the province continues to experience severe weather.
Zikalala assisted uMgungundlovu District and uMsunduzi Local Municipality in cleaning up after heavy rains in Ward 23, Peace Valley, caused the Msunduzi River to burst its banks and flood surrounding communities earlier this month.
According to Zikalala, the community of Peace Valley bore the brunt of the heavy rains.
“Several households were submerged in water, and we would like to thank all stakeholders for their quick response in evacuating the 35 families affected by the flooding to a nearby shelter.”
According to Zikalala, the province is prone to weather-related incidents, particularly during the spring and summer seasons.
“We are all responsible for heeding the South African Weather Service’s weather warnings in order to protect ourselves and our families.
We also believe that it is past time for riverfront residents to consider relocating. Flooding has become more frequent and severe as weather patterns have changed dramatically,” he concluded.
