Newcastle Municipality, in collaboration with various government departments and local non-profit organisations, joined millions of people worldwide in an anti-violence campaign against women and children.
According to the municipality’s communications department, the 16-day activism campaign aims to raise awareness of the negative impact that violence and abuse have on women and children, as well as to permanently rid society of abuse.
The Newcastle Municipality, Ubuhle Benkosi Community Development, Morester Child, Youth Care Centre, and various government departments kicked off the day with a fun walk from the Newcastle Library to the Newcastle High School sports grounds, where a formal programme was held.
Cllr Xolani Dube, Newcastle Mayor, said he strongly condemned the abuse of women and children and believed that the ‘success of such a campaign was dependent on our daily individual and collective actions to protect our society from the cycle of abuse.’
“As we begin our 16-day campaign to end violence against women and children let us permanently rid society of predators who prey on the vulnerable. I urge the Newcastle community to unite in condemning the abuse of women and children. It ends with this generation,” concluded Dube.
