Municipality kicks off transport awareness month with road safety campaign
In their tireless efforts to promote road safety during Transport Month, the Newcastle Municipality launched its annual Transport Awareness Month campaign with a roadblock on October 16 at the Hilldrop and Allen Street intersection.
Municipal spokesperson, Mthandeni Myende, said the initiative was led by the municipality’s Department for Community Services Portfolio Chairperson, Cllr ME Hlatshwayo, alongside Strategic Executive Director (SED) Gift Dlamini.
The campaign, with the motto ‘Road Safety For All;, saw various stakeholders join forces, including SAP), ABSA, the Department of Health, iMas and MMG.
“Transport Month, observed nationally every October, serves as a platform for addressing critical issues such as road safety, responsible driving, road accidents, and the economic significance of road infrastructure,” said Myende.
The Newcastle Municipality’s campaign aimed to promote vigilance and adherence to traffic laws, with a focus on ensuring the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
He said that Mayor Cllr Xolani Dube had also long been an advocate for improving road infrastructure and enhancing safety measures in Newcastle.
During the event, SED Dlamini urged law enforcement officers to maintain road safety, combat crime, and prevent the transportation of illegal substances.
He stressed that Newcastle ‘must protect its reputation by remaining a secure area for all its residents, reaffirming the importance of law and order on the roads’.
Municipal Manager, ZW Mcineka, and Amajuba SAPS Commander, Major General Frederick Alexander echoed these sentiments, emphasising that road safety is a collective responsibility.
They reiterated that improved road infrastructure not only boosts safety but also supports economic growth by enhancing connectivity and facilitating the transportation of goods.
The Newcastle Municipality’s campaign aligns with the national focus on road infrastructure as a key driver of economic growth.
Mayor Dube said he wished ‘to push for greater investment in road improvements, highlighting the long-term benefits of safer travel, job creation, and increased business opportunities.’
The municipality is also committed to strengthening traffic law enforcement and educating road users.
“The roadblock event underscored the importance of obeying traffic laws and ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy. Through collaboration with SAPS and the Department of Health, the municipality aims to reduce accidents and fatalities, especially during peak travel periods,” said Myende.
The Newcastle Municipality used the launch to demonstrate its commitment to road safety by donating a car seat to the parents of a 4-month-old infant. This proactive approach highlights the municipality’s dedication to protecting vulnerable road users.
“Under Mayor Dube’s leadership and with the support of various stakeholders, Newcastle is taking proactive steps to create safer roads and drive economic growth throughout the community,” Myende concluded.
