A quote once read: “There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others.” With that being said, Pieter Aucamp has taken an initiative to raise much-needed funds for cancer sufferers.
Aucamp, who is the principal at Lucas Meyer Primary School, decided in his own capacity to join the Midmar Mile, which is recognised as the world’s largest open water swimming event set to take place on February 6 in Howick. This will be his way to support CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa), which is a non-profit leader in the fight against cancer. This organisation educates the public and supports all people affected by cancer.
Aucamp mentions that he will be taking part in the 8 Mile event, which is 12.8km over two days. On the Thursday he will do 6.4km, with another 6.4km on the Friday. He has to complete four miles in five hours. He explains that he started taking part in this kind of event in 2021, when he did one mile with his family.
Aucamp adds that, “CANSA is an organisation that is very close to my heart because I lost my dad to cancer in 2018. This is one foundation I will always support.”
Aucamp has a good swimming background; his previous swimming records and experiences allowed him to qualify for the 8 Mile. Since Aucamp has always been a swimmer with an excellent sporting background, he decided to broaden his horizons when he also took on one of the most gruelling marathons in the world, namely the Comrades Marathon.
