Municipality celebrates infrastructure milestone with refurbishment of key 20 MVA transformer
The long-awaited R7-million refurbishment of the Central A Substation 20 MVA transformer will come as a relief to residents and businesses.
The Newcastle Municipality said the reconditioned transformer, which has been out of commission since 2017, will ensure a reliable electricity supply, and help stimulate economic growth and raise the living standards of residents.
The municipality described the refurbishment as a ‘milestone’ and proof of the municipality’s commitment to responsible expenditure by investing in essential infrastructure to ensure the delivery of quality services to citizens.
Previously, the municipality was reliant on one transformer to supply the entire network, which was a tremendous risk to the infrastructure of the town.
“We were facing a critical situation where the collapse of the sole operational transformer would have caused catastrophic damage to our infrastructure,” said Newcastle Mayor, Cllr D.X Dube.
“The successful refurbishment of the 20 MVA transformer is a huge relief and a major achievement for our municipality.
“This refurbishment is a significant step towards achieving our vision of becoming a world-class city. We will continue to invest in projects that enhance service delivery, promote economic development, and improve the lives of our citizens.
“However, the municipality acknowledges that there are areas within the community that have been without electricity for an extended period due to faulty or broken transformers.
“The municipality is working tirelessly with Eskom to find an amicable solution to this challenge.
“We understand the frustration and inconvenience caused by the lack of electricity in these areas, and we request the community’s cooperation and patience as we work towards resolving this issue,” Mayor Dube added.
“We are committed to finding a lasting solution and restoring electricity supply to all affected areas as soon as possible.
“The municipality’s stakeholder engagement, effective communication, and partnership-building efforts have been instrumental in achieving this milestone.
“The municipality prioritises transparency, accountability, and community participation in its decision-making processes to ensure continued delivery of high-quality services to the community.”
