11 teams race around Newcastle for a chance to win R10K

The ‘tasks’ were set up as fun, team-building exercises that required little more than enthusiasm, spontaneity, an adventurous spirit, a sense of playfulness and a willingness to laugh.

Eleven teams raced around Newcastle on Saturday, April 12, for a chance to win the R10 000 grand prize in the 2025 Lekker Resies hosted by Champ Group.

This was the third annual Lekker Resies event hosted under the Champ banner since it purchased the event concept from Amajuba High School in 2023.

Teams had to make their way to 20 different locations, this year, completing a task at each location to earn a clue which would lead them to the next location.

The ‘tasks’ were set up as fun, team-building exercises that required little more than enthusiasm, spontaneity, an adventurous spirit, a sense of playfulness and a willingness to laugh.

Among other things, participants were required to jump into the pool at Blackrock Casino, shimmy down the pole at the Fire Department, trust their fate to a self-reversing car at BMW, drive a lawn-mower through an obstacle course set up at HydraPower and quickly change into a pair of funky socks at Factory Plaza.

“Besides the great goodie bags each participant received at the start, they got amazing gifts at a number of the locations they visited,” said Johan Pieters of Champ. “The event really tested how well participants know Newcastle, and teams said they travelled roughly 150km altogether getting to know our town a little better. It was also a nice networking opportunity for the businesses that entered teams, as well as for the businesses that participated as locations during the event.”

Pieters continued, “It was so much fun. People loved it. We actually got a call the next day from one of the companies that entered a team asking what we did to their staff …They went to work so positive and full of spirit. They have now asked us to host a Lekker Resies just for their company as a team-building exercise.”

Pieters thanked event organisers, Krystal Raghoo for setting up the clues and the route, Romano Raghoo for the marketing of the event and Chris de Kock for setting up the venue.

The first team to complete the race and win the R10 000 was Westchem Warriors, which arrived back at the start (The Pines Wedding and Conference Village) at 1.38pm, taking just more than five and half hours to finish.

In second place was Team Stucky, while a team from Jenny Internet came in third.
