Newcastle police have opened a murder case after a man was fatally stabbed while attempting to assist his brother during an altercation at a local shop.

Amajuba District Corporate Communications Officer Constable N.M. Langa said the incident occurred on Sunday, May 11, at a tuck shop in Nellieville, Dannhauser area.
“It was alleged that the victim had accompanied his brother to the shop. The brother went alone into the shop while his sibling waited outside. Moments later, the brother was attacked inside the shop,” said Constable Langa.
The brother waiting outside reportedly rushed inside to help but was stabbed multiple times by the suspect, who fled the scene.
Emergency services transported the victim to Nellie’s Clinic, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries.
According to police, the suspect is known to both the victim and his brother, which assisted in his swift arrest by members of the Dannhauser SAPS.
The suspect appeared in the Dannhauser Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 12. The case was remanded to Thursday, May 22.
