Newcastle residents to feel the pinch as municipal tariffs rise sharply
Rates, water, refuse and electricity costs set to increase; residents urged to cut consumption from July and August.
The municipality has officially released the expected tariff increases that will come into effect from July 1, 2025.
They are as follows:
– Property rates: 6%
– Sewerage: 6%
– Refuse removal: 6%
– Water: 7%
– Electricity: Average of 13%
It must also be noted that the increases in water and electricity tariffs will only be implemented from August 1, 2025.
The municipality further advises residents to manage their electricity usage by making small changes to daily routines.
Try following the tips below to avoid a ice-cold winter electrical bill:
- Cook quick and easy dishes for one-pot meals.
- Fix leaking taps. By doing this, you will be sure to play a vital role in combating water and electrical wastage.
- Replace conventional outdoor lights with motion-sensor globes as they use less electricity.
- Switch to solar powered garden lights, as they use free energy from the sun.
- Set swimming pool pump’s running time to six hours and filter the water twice every 24 hours.
- Clean your pool’s filter at regular interval throughout the year, as a clean filter is key to better water flow.
- Switch off your geyser during the day.
- Unplug all electrical appliances, including the computer, coffee machine, television sets and entertainment consoles when they are not being used.
- Switch off your air-conditioners and heaters and opt for a warm blanket instead.
- Switch off all unnecessary lights.
- Switch off the water and power supply to water features and fountains in the garden.
Residents are reminded that what you don’t use, won’t cost you a cent.
Energy efficiency in and around the home means an electricity smart lifestyle any season of the year.
