CRIME: Convicted Madadeni rapist handed 15-year sentence

A 36-year-old man was convicted and sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment by the Madadeni Regional Court on June 18.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

According to police reports, the victim, aged 29, stated that on June 16, 2024, while on her way home, the suspect approached her and dragged her to an unused toilet where he raped her.

“Police were notified immediately after the assault before Sergeant TP Mduli was assigned to investigate the case,” said Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, Lizzy Arumugam.

She further stated that Mduli worked tirelessly to secure the conviction, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to justice.

Lieutenant Colonel SL Chapi, Commander of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, commended Sgt Mduli for her dedication and thorough work that led to the accused’s conviction.
