Learners explore KZN tourism through creative competition win
Learners experienced a three-day tourism retreat after excelling in the iNgakithi Tourism Competition.
Thulani Mncube — together with his Tourism Studies teacher, Nqobile Makathini — was recently honoured for an outstanding poem presented at the iNgakithi Tourism Competition. The event brought together learners from across the Zululand District, who competed in both public speaking and poetry categories.
Winners Treated to Educational Tourism Retreat
Mncube (a Grade 12 learner at KwaNotshelwa High School) and Makathini were treated to an educational tour hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) in partnership with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. The tour served as a retreat for winners of the iNgakithi Tourism Competition, offering learners an enriching three-day tourism experience in St Lucia and the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.

Creative Expression and Skills Development
Learners were exposed to a dynamic learning platform across poetry, public speaking, culinary and master chef categories. Through these activities, they explored tourism through creative expression, gained practical hospitality and culinary skills, and developed confidence, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation of tourism’s value within their communities and future career pathways.
Tour Highlights Iconic KwaZulu-Natal Destinations
According to EDTEA’s press release on their official Facebook page, the tour provided learners with an unforgettable tourism adventure, showcasing some of KwaZulu-Natal’s most iconic destinations. Their journey included a serene overnight stay at Hilltop Camp under Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, followed by an early-morning game drive through the breathtaking Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. They also visited the iMfolozi Game Reserve Centenary Centre for rhino awareness, encountered remarkable wildlife at the St Lucia Crocodile Centre, and enjoyed the natural beauty of the St Lucia Estuary during a scenic boat tour.
A Memorable Night Under the Stars
The day concluded with a magical ‘Dinner under the Stars’ experience in the heart of the bush — an inspiring moment that deepened their connection to nature, culture, and conservation.
Tourism Adventure Leaves Lasting Impact
Overall, the retreat offered a captivating blend of wildlife, culture and conservation learning that brought the world of tourism to life for the young participants.
